The convergence of the "Remain in Mexico" policy and reduced US government funding for Latin-American non-profits has transformed the US-Mexico border into a refugee camp.
New Story embarked on a mission to address this crisis by investigating strategies encompassing both retrofitting existing structures and constructing new housing. Retrofitting presents unique challenges, including comprehensive assessments of current conditions and the integration of new elements into established communities.
research
Anticipated climate migration patterns indicate a substantial increase in the forthcoming decades, potentially leading to as many as 3.9 million climate migrants in the Mexico and Central America subregion by 2050. Latin America might witness an influx of up to 10.6 million climate migrants, influenced by factors such as emissions levels and uneven development.
Approximately 60,000 individuals were returned to Mexico to await their asylum court dates, while an additional 25,000 resided in refugee camps along the Mexico border in 2020.

A HUMAN CENTERED APPROACH Addressing the substantial forthcoming displacement in Latin America necessitates holistic solutions. Our proposition entails empowering individuals to become active contributors to these solutions. By engaging individuals to gather data about their communities and neighborhoods, we can pair them with relevant case studies showcasing global projects and solutions. This data-driven approach empowers our organization to allocate resources strategically, focusing efforts based on community preferences—such as targeted surveys of specific areas and structures rather than entire neighborhoods.
prototype
Our prototype introduces a new feature to our existing app, enabling users to contribute information and match themselves with potential solutions. This data is subsequently analyzed by our organization to gain an insider's perspective of the community and neighborhood. Users can peruse various case studies and select projects they envision for their own communities.
